I used to be a great fan of Vietnam war movies, Good Morning Vietnam, Hamburger Hill, Platoon, Born on the 4th of July if I recall and others. Last August when PAL offered another travel deal, Ho Chi Minh City was on the list. The city, formerly named Saigon, was later changed to honor Ho Chi Minh, then President & Prime Minister who led the independence movement.

If you visit Ho Chi Minh, make sure you are around District 1; this is where you eat, shop, party and meet other travelers. Don’t miss Ben Tanh Market and Saigon Square. There are several hotels and hostels, we booked at Saigon-Mini Hotel at a very affordable PhP800 per room with a very good accommodation and that includes breakfast for 2.

There’s too much to talk about Ho Chi Minh City, let me just show some of our pictures:

Part of our adventure is food, especially local “must-tries:”

My favorite rice noodles, “Pho” at Pres. Clinton’s favorite restaurant.

And I always make sure I can try their local transpo, Cyclo. I was charged 30,000 dong for this 800 meter ride.

Check this out, I bought a few of this for souvenir, Lacquerwares.

We joined a half-day tour to Cuchi Tunnel,  where the war was concentrated. This is a model of their multi-level 200-km long of tunnel network, can you imagine that? That’s more than Iligan-CDO roundtrip. Underground hospital, kitchen, conference room, etc. It’s probably where children were born and probably it’s where they were made. Just incredible!

One of the entrance to the tunnel, probably why the US soldiers backed out and I don’t think Ruffa Mae can get in to this tunnel.

Weekend in Camiguin

When Bullit came home from US to reunite with the love of her life, she invited her closest friends to spend 1 weekend in a beach, an escorted honeymoon. With her so limited time, I suggested we go to Camiguin, used to be my most visited getaway and my first travel destination with my long time travel buddy Polly, during the Lanzones Festival of 1995.

Booked at Paras Beach Resort for 8 pax, we opted for the Deluxe Cottage for P5900/night with 2 rooms and  4 extra couch.

Camiguin became more accessible when Paras Seacat started sailing early this year at an affordable 400/pax. Tickets can be bought at Paras Machinery in Camague, Iligan City. The Seacat leaves CDO around 8am and ETA at Benoni Terminal 11:30am. Our hired multicab met us with a placard welcoming us. Contract price is P1500 to include tour and bringing us back to the pier the following day. Pier to Paras Beach Resort is approximately 30 minutes drive. Had lunch in Mambajao, Camiguin’s capital, before proceeding to the resort. After check-in, 1st destination was the Sto. Nino Cold Spring at around 2pm then transferred to Ardent Hot Spring for a night bath then dinner in Mambajao around 8pm.

It is highly recommended to visit White Island as early as possible to avoid bigger waves and blistering sunlight so we left the resort around 7am after a light breakfast on a motorized boat for the 10 minutes ride at P400/trip 7 pax maximum per trip. The island was a bit crowded already but relaxing especially with ladies on skimpy suits.

Went back to the resort, mingle with other guests at the resort’s swimming pool and had lunch around 11:30 just before check-out. Food at the resort is good and affordable.

Before boarding the 3pm trip to CDO, had our 2nd round of lunch at the J & A Fishpen & Lagoon in Benoni, seafoods very fresh but a bit expensive, thanks to our honeymooners for this quite luxurious trip. Looking forward for another honeymoon :-)

Macau, Macao

Been to Las Vegas a couple of times and visiting Macau will get you another feel of it but with a blend of Asian and Portuguese. Used to be an overseas province of Portugal until 1999, Macau, is now a Special Administrative Region of People’s Republic of China just like its neighbor Hong Kong.

The most practical mode of transportation between Macau and HK is the ferry or you may call it fast craft or turbojet which will cost you P750 during day trips and P1,000 if you take the night service. A ferry leaves every 30 minutes and travel time is approximately an hour and half. If you want to travel with class, take the helicopter or the sky shuttle, for just P14,000, wow, a very expensive 16 minutes ride huh! A breathtaking view can cost another thousand pesos if you travel at night, should be a helluvan experience. Who knows, you could win in the casinos. No need of visas by the way.

Macau is famous for gambling, casinos everywhere but there are a lot of attractions too, like the Old Ruins, the Macau Tower, etc. I suggest you see the attractions during the day and experience casinos during the night and watch the 15 minutes fireworks display.

Food is good, or even better also with a touch of Asian and Portuguese, a bit hot and spicy.

Accommodations are a bit expensive, mostly are hotel standards. There are a few hostels but are not so comfy but nonetheless sleepable.

Getting around is easy and cheap, a choice of bus, taxi, van or even on foot. We took the van but later noticed that Macau is so small, compressed and very accessible.

Shopping? Spent most of our time in Esprit Shop, its Polly’s must visit shop, discounts got us so attracted.

Discovering Hong Kong

Let’s discover Hong Kong, Asia’s most vibrant metropolis believed to be having a perfect and unique blend of East and West. With our travel buddies Laurence & Camilla, Gino & Chona, we took the CP flight via Manila on a good travel deal at the newly opened Terminal 3, August of 2008. Unfortunately, it was only Mister Donut and Jolibee serving the food court. Sorry, they’re out of Chicken Joy.

food1This trip was more of an adventure, another do-it-yourself tour, thanks to a very extensive travel guide by the Hong Kong Tourism Board: things to do, accommodation, places of interest, dining, etc. Booked at Cosmic Guest House, good location, relatively cheap and clean but a bit small. Upon exit from the airport, took the bus to Tsim Sa Tsui. Problem with HK is that not too many locals speak English. You have to do it with action. I can’t remember how I conversed with the bus driver but we were alighted at the right location. Wow! It’s like staying inside a huge mall, a long strip of stores still busy at midnight. Had dinner at 11:30PM at a small resto, with no idea of what to eat, price, etc, everything in Chinese, we just copied what other customers were eating, a good start. Some restaurants post pictures though.

ngongpingOn day 2, we were scheduled to visit Ngong Ping 360, one of HK’s must see attraction. It consists of a 360 degrees view Cable Car and a themed village in Lantau Island. Close to the themed village is the Po Lin Monastery and Giant Buddha up around 250 steps. After Ngong Ping, we transferred to The Peak or Victoria Peak at the HK Central on a tram, a very good experience. I was just curious why some of the signs include a Tagalog translation like “Bawal magtapon nang basura.”

Another highlight in HK is the Symphony of Lights, a must-see. Experience watching laser lights dancing accompanied with music. Best viewed from the Avenue of Stars and satarts at 8PM.

kalapatiWe tried to visit Schenzen, China but we didn’t make it. The immigration office at the border don’t issue visa anymore, it has to be filed at their office in HK Central. I wanted to beg but the officers seemed so strict. Instead, we hopped on a ferry and went to a fishing village, in Chung Chau Island, a recommended destination by a couchsurfing friend. Also called the Dumbbell Island because of it’s shape. They also sell different kinds of bulad but I got attracted to the Dragon fruit. There are several restaurants serving authentic siomai & bun or siopao and my first time to try a deep fried Kalapati.

There’s still a lot to discover in Hong Kong, I need a month vacation:-)
